With vibrant displays and hands-on demonstrations, The Design Center featuring JELD-WEN windows and doors is hoping to take the guess work out of home improvements.

The Design Center Columbus opened last week at 765 Brooksedge Blvd. in Westerville. The 9,500-square-foot building is the second of its kind for the worldwide company and will employee nine employees.

“We’ve taken all those steps and rolled them into a one-stop location, so we solve many of the challenges that homeowners have faced in the past when upgrading to new doors and windows,” said Amy Zimmerman, marketing manager for The Design Center.

With a vortex design of display samples spiced by large flat-screen computer displays, The Design Center feels like an Apple Store for windows and doors.

Customers are greeted when they enter the building, and the process to tailor a specific presentation for their interests begins.

Six interactive displays include one that has heat lamps behind two different types of glass so customers can feel how much heat passes through when deciding how important energy efficiency is in their purchase.

There’s another where you can see what it’s like to view different scenes through the company’s different glass and screen offerings.

“It’s kind of like a museum where you can learn about windows,” said Jeff Vaughn, general manager of The Design Center and a 25-year company employee.

The Design Center offers whole lines of wood and vinyl windows. They’re available for standard order in 16 different colors, but can be ordered to custom match any paint.

An array of standard grid patterns are available as well, but those also can be ordered to any customer’s own design.

Additional options include hardware, how the windows open, extra-durable finishes, easy-clean models and customization that includes logos or intricate glass work incorporated into the product.

“If you can draw it up on a bar napkin, we can (probably) do it,” Vaughn said.

With the slogan “decorate with doors,” there are just as many options for interior, exterior and garage doors made from steel, fiberglass or wood.

Door displays show how the door is constructed, which is important for its sound-blocking ability.

For those looking for instant gratification, customers can take photos of their houses and use them at digital interactive stations in The Design Center, to see how the wide array of JELD-WEN doors and windows would look on and in their homes.

The international window and door manufacturer is headquartered in Klamath Falls, Ore.,  but its products are made in 80 factories throughout North America, including two in mid-Ohio.

Vaughn said those include one in Mount Vernon, that opened in 1965 and is the company’s oldest, as well as one in Pataskala that employs 100.

“We’re made in Ohio by Ohioans,” Vaughn said.

The close proximity makes custom orders available in just a few weeks.

The Design Center is JELD-WEN’s first foray into the retail market directly to consumers for replacement windows and doors.

With the recession, Vaughn said homeowners are choosing to stay in their homes longer and make improvements.

Westerville was chosen for a showroom to serve all of Central Ohio, which the company sees as an especially ripe market for home improvements.

“Columbus is an area where the demographics show people are fixing up their homes,” Vaughn said.
