NA Symphony seeks photos for Columbus Bicentennial
By BRETT NUCKLES
Rolling landscapes, iconic landmarks, and Ohioans at work or play -- the New Albany Symphony Orchestra wants photos of all that and more for an upcoming collaboration featuring music and photography.
Professional, amateur or student photographers are invited to submit their most striking Ohio photographs to serve as a backdrop for a 2012 concert entitled "Portraits of a Columbus Bicentennial."
The show, slated for Feb. 12, 2012 at the McCoy Center for the Arts, 100 W. Dublin-Granville Road, will celebrate the bicentennial of Columbus, which was founded in 1812.
"We are looking for photos that define what Columbus is today," said Heather Garner, director of the symphony orchestra.

About 100 photographs, to be hand-picked in January, will be individually displayed on a backdrop behind the musicians as they play a variety of quintessentially American tunes.
The concert will features Aaron Copland's "Lincoln Portrait," played over portions of Lincoln's personal writings and the Gettysburg Address, read by Columbus Mayor Mike Coleman.
"I hope that this concert will feel very inclusive because so many people will be contributing and participating in it," Garner said.
Submissions can be sent to newalbanysymphony@gmail.com, with subject line "2012 NASO Bicentennial Photographs." Emails should include the entrant's name, city and, if you are a student, age.
The show is made possible by a grant from The PNC Foundation, awarded to the New Albany Symphony Orchestra as part of the Arts Alive program, officials announced this week.
The orchestra will receive about $44,000 to fund programming, including the bicentennial concert.
It is now one of 13 Central Ohio arts organizations to win a slice of $1.5 million in grant money that is up for grabs.
The initiative is meant to fund arts projects that are collaborative and technological, so the New Albany Symphony's bicentennial concert fit the bill, said Michael Gonsiorowski, PNC regional president of Central Ohio.
"They're really blending mediums here with this performance, and that resonated with us," Gonsiorowski said. "We think it will have strong audience appeal, particularly since it's a kickoff of the bicentennial celebration."
The New Albany Symphony's 2011-12 concert season begins Oct. 16 with Bernstein, Beethoven & Brahms at the McCoy Center, featuring internationally recognized violinist Karen Gomyo.
