While there aren't too many "sure things" in life beyond death and taxes, watching the marching Eagles compete in the state competition comes awfully close.

For the 25th straight yet, the Bishop Watterson High School marching band will compete at the state contest. The Eagles perform at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Dublin Jerome High School.

"Being one of the few bands in the state of Ohio to be so consistent in state marching band appearances is a source of pride for the program, school and community," said Band Director Mike Renzi, who has been with the Watterson band program since 1990, in a written statement.

"The Bishop Watterson marching band also has the distinction of being the only Catholic school marching band in the state of Ohio that has qualified for the state contest for this many years. The support that Bishop Watterson has given to the band program over the years has been a very important reason for this streak.

The marching Eagles' success in competition this fall includes:

* First place, class AA, at Westerville North HS Oct. 22 -- in music, general effect, percussion, color guard and overall band;

* First place, class A, OMEA at Teays Valley HS Oct. 15 -- percussion and color guard;

* Field Commander Nick Mosko also won first place in class A at OMEA Teays Valley HS Oct. 15.

* Runner-Up Grand Champion, earning a Superior rating, OMEA Teays Valley HS Oct. 15.

* Third place class AAA MSBA Bellbrook High School on Sept. 24. Bishop Watterson, a MSBA class AA band, was placed into the class AAA competition for the Bellbrook event.

* First place class A, OMEA Westerville Central HS Oct. 8, percussion and third-place overall, with a Superior rating.

"We are extremely proud of our marching band's many accomplishments, especially in reaching state competition 25 consecutive years," said BWHS Principal Marian Hutson in a press release.

"Our instrumental music program is an important and integral part of our tradition of excellence."

The Eagles marching band also competes at the Mid-States Band Association Championships at Beavercreek High School Saturday, Nov. 5.

The Bishop Watterson band will close out the calendar year by performing at Disney World's Magic Kingdom on Dec. 30 -- the ninth time performing at Disney World and the band's 14th major trip since 1987.
